FIELD RECORDING

La Baie de Somme

A collection of recordings from a trip to La Baie De Somme on the atlantic coast of Normandy, France, in December of 2021

The Somme river which flows through France and gives the department it's name, finds it's way into the English Channel at this location.

La Baie de Somme is an ornithological hotspot, and you'll hear plenty of gulls and egrets in these recordings.

The bay itself is made up of two environments; a salt marsh and the silkke mudflat area. And two estuaries; the Somme and the Maye.

A peaceful location where gulls and seals have reclaimed old war bunkers, and you can walk ancient wall or rugged shore to watch rustic fishing boats trawl the coast, while the landscape changes with the tide.

Les Ardennes

Etang de Bairon ; Docks and Streams

A collection of Recordings from a trip to Les Ardennes on the French-Belgian Border in October 2022.

Les Ardennes is a rugged forested area spanning across France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, and situated along an ancient high-mountain chain; the Ardennes Massif.
A number of rivers find their source within this area (the Lesse, the Ourthe, the Ambleve...), and so it is also home to many lakes, ponds (Etangs) and marshes.

I had not planned a recording session on this hike, so I had only my Zoom H4n and it's in-built mics, but the slapping and suction of the water under the floating dock  and the countless streams en route warranted a few stops.

Tignes-Les-Brevieres

Alpine Meltwater

A collection of Recordings from a trip to Tignes-Les-Brevieres in the French Alps in Spring of 2021.

Tignes is a ski resort town, and les Brevieres is a smaller village nestled under the looming walls of the Tignes Dam (Barrage de Tignes), which blocks Lac Chevril and allows L'Isere river to flow.

Les Brevieres is more picturesque than the larger Tignes, and while at a slightly lower altitude, it's geography allows it to receive as much snowfall as Tignes itself.
I had the chance to visit this quaint village in spring when the snow and ice was beginning to melt under the warming sun (but the air temperature still dropped to -10 celsius), and luckily while the main ski resorts were closed leaving me to wander mostly uninterupted.
